FLN36 12D Sealed SF6 Enclosure with Explosion Relief Safety Design

The FLN36-12D SF6 Load Switch prioritizes operator safety through its robust sealed epoxy resin enclosure and integrated explosion relief features. Unlike open-air designs where internal arc faults can directly endanger personnel, the FLN36-12D contains all live parts within a sealed SF6 environment, with engineered pressure relief pathways that direct any overpressure safely away from the operator .

The enclosure is manufactured from glass fiber reinforced epoxy resin using the APG (Automatic Pressure Gelation) process. This material provides exceptional mechanical strength, dielectric properties, and resistance to tracking and corrosion. The upper and lower housing halves are sealed together with specialized gaskets, creating a hermetically sealed chamber that contains the SF6 gas at 0.04-0.05 MPa (gauge pressure at 20°C). A pressure gauge mounted on the front panel allows easy gas monitoring .

The safety design incorporates a pressure relief membrane—a structurally weakened point in the enclosure engineered to rupture at a predetermined overpressure. In the rare event of an internal arc fault, the rapidly expanding SF6 decomposition gases are directed through this membrane and into the switchgear's designated arc exhaust channel, which vents to the rear or top of the cabinet, away from the operator . This feature is critical for achieving IAC (Internal Arc Classification) certification.

The sealed construction also protects against environmental hazards. The SF6 gas acts as both insulation and arc-quenching medium, with dielectric properties unaffected by external dust, humidity, or salt spray. The leakage rate is maintained below 1% per year when properly assembled, ensuring decades of maintenance-free operation. The enclosure is designed to withstand internal pressure without deformation that could affect contact alignment .
