FN7 12 Side Operating Mechanism and Switchgear Adaptability

The FN7(C)-12 series extends the base FN7-12 design with a side-mounted operating mechanism configuration, specifically engineered to simplify installation in fixed-type metal-enclosed switchgear and compact ring main units . This adaptation addresses a common challenge for switchgear manufacturers: integrating standardized switching modules into cabinets with limited front access or non-standard dimensions.

The side-operating mechanism positions the manual handle and control interface on the cabinet's side panel rather than the front. This configuration offers significant advantages for space-constrained installations. The vertical orientation of the operating shaft allows the switch to be mounted deeper within the cabinet while still providing accessible manual control . This is particularly valuable in prefabricated substations and modular switchgear assemblies where front panel space is reserved for other components.

Installation is streamlined through standardized interface dimensions. The side-operating version uses the same mechanical linkage and interlock system as the front-operated version . The mechanism mounts directly to the switch's operating shaft extension, with factory-aligned brackets positioning the handle at a consistent height for operator convenience. The CS6 type manual operating mechanism can be used in either configuration, reducing spare parts inventory .

Mechanical interlocking is fully maintained in the side-operating version. The interlock system prevents:

  • Closing the switch with the earthing switch engaged
  • Operating the earthing switch with the main switch closed

          -allowing front cable compartment access only when earthed 
These safety features are critical for switchgear that must meet five-prevention requirements for operator protection.

The side-operating mechanism is available for both the base load switch (FN7-12) and the switch-fuse combination (FN7-12R/FN7-12RA). The same installation dimensions apply, enabling standardized cabinet designs across multiple configurations . The mechanical life of 500 operations specified for the standard switch applies equally to the side-operating version .
