The Purpose of Phase Selection (Point-on-Wave) Switching for Circuit Breakers

In modern medium-voltage power systems, especially when switching sensitive loads like capacitor banks, unloaded transformers, or overhead lines, the conventional random closing and opening of circuit breakers can generate severe electrical transients. These include high inrush currents and switching overvoltages, which stress equipment and degrade grid power quality. The strategic purpose of Phase Selection Switching is to actively control the exact moment (phase angle) of contact separation or engagement, transforming the circuit breaker from a simple switching device into a precision instrument for transient suppression.

The primary goal for closing operations is inrush current suppression and overvoltage limitation. For capacitor banks, closing at the system voltage peak (where the voltage derivative is zero) minimizes the initial transient charging current. Similarly, for transformers, controlled closing near the voltage peak significantly reduces magnetizing inrush. For long unloaded lines, closing when the difference between the line's residual voltage and the source voltage is minimal effectively limits switching overvoltages, protecting insulation systems.

The Purpose of Phase Selection (Point-on-Wave) Switching for Circuit Breakers

The key objective for opening operations is to extend electrical life and prevent reignition. This is critical for interrupting capacitive currents (e.g., capacitor banks). By initiating contact separation at a precise pre-calibrated time before a current zero, the ZN63(VS1)-12 Series Indoor Fixed-Type High-Voltage Vacuum Circuit Breaker, when equipped with a phase selection controller, ensures sufficient contact gap is established exactly as the current passes through zero. This short-arc technique provides optimal dielectric recovery strength, virtually eliminating the risk of post-arc reignition and the dangerous overvoltages it causes, while dramatically reducing contact erosion.

Integrating a Phase Selection Switching function represents a significant upgrade in system performance and equipment longevity. For applications involving frequent switching of reactive loads, it is an essential investment in reliability. Putai also supports customization and the supply of related medium-voltage accessories to meet system integration needs.
