LW38 405kV Plateau Type Breaker Engineered for High Altitude Reliability

High-altitude installations present unique challenges for outdoor circuit breakers. Reduced air density at elevations above 1000m diminishes dielectric strength and cooling capacity, potentially compromising equipment performance. The LW38-40.5kV Outdoor SF6 Circuit Breaker addresses these challenges with a specialized plateau-type design that maintains full rated performance up to 3000m altitude, making it ideal for projects in mountainous regions and high plateaus.

 

The breaker's SF6 insulation system provides inherent advantages for high-altitude operation. Unlike air-insulated equipment that relies on atmospheric air for dielectric strength, the LW38's sealed SF6 chamber maintains constant gas density regardless of external air pressure. This means the lightning impulse withstand voltage of 185/215 kV and power frequency withstand voltage of 95/119 kV remain fully effective even at 3000m elevation, where air-insulated equipment would require significant derating.

 

 

The plateau-type configuration includes enhanced external insulation components. The porcelain or composite insulators feature extended creepage distances designed to compensate for reduced air density and increased pollution exposure common at high altitudes. The minimum nominal creepage distance of 31mm/kV ensures reliable performance in Class IV pollution environments often encountered at industrial sites located on plateaus. The breaker's operating mechanism is also optimized for reliable function at lower air pressures and temperatures.

 

Environmental adaptability extends to temperature extremes common at high altitudes. The LW38 operates reliably across a -30°C to +40°C temperature range, with the SF6 gas maintaining its dielectric and arc-quenching properties even in severe cold. The SF6 moisture content is strictly controlled (acceptance value ≤150ppm, operation value ≤300ppm) to prevent condensation and ensure consistent performance during temperature cycling, which is more severe at high altitudes due to intense solar radiation and rapid cooling at night.
