LW38 405kV High Current Rating and Capacitor Bank Switching Performance

Modern power systems demand circuit breakers capable of handling both high continuous currents and the unique stresses of reactive power switching. The breaker's high continuous current rating of 3150A accommodates the largest distribution feeders and transformer secondaries without derating. This capacity is enabled by the efficient heat transfer properties of SF6 gas, which provides better cooling than air for the same enclosure size. The rated short-time withstand current of 31.5kA for 4 seconds ensures the breaker can carry fault currents for coordination purposes without damage, maintaining system selectivity while downstream protection operates.

 

 

Capacitor bank switching is one of the most demanding duties for any circuit breaker due to the high inrush currents and risk of restrike. The LW38 is specifically engineered for this application with a rated capacitor bank breaking current of 400A. The SF6 arc extinguishing system provides superior dielectric recovery, minimizing the risk of restrike that could damage capacitor units. This capability is essential for power factor correction installations in industrial plants and utility substations.

 

The breaker's performance is validated through rigorous testing, including rated short-circuit breaking current of 31.5kA and rated peak withstand current of 80kA. With 25 to 20 rated short-circuit current interruptions (depending on rating) and a mechanical life of 5000 operations, the LW38 demonstrates exceptional durability for both normal switching and fault protection duties. The operating mechanism's closing time ≤0.1s ensures precise synchronization for capacitor bank energization, minimizing transient overvoltages.
